Well, let me tell you a quick story about how I transformed an over 3 decade old family business in New York City, in tinsmith and roofing, to full-home brownstone restoration in 1988 without knowing if it would work.

Hi, my name is Chip Miles, and it all started as Miles Tinsmith and Roofing in 1953 in Greenwich Village, NYC with my Dad. By 1988 I was trying to take over the business from my Dad who had already been doing it for 35 years.

I was struggling with whether I should continue to do a small portion of restoration like he did or do more comprehensive remodeling and restoration of brownstones in The Village, from top to bottom and inside out.

And I was getting more and more frustrated with shoddy craftsmanship and the lack of pride I witnessed from other contractors, and their employees, who worked on these bigger jobs in the area.

But, I was encountering a HUGE hurdle in getting this started: I couldn't find the quality craftsman I needed to help me realize this dream of bringing back old-world craftsmanship to modern remodels.

This meant my dream of comprehensive remodeling and restorations was in jeopardy. As you can imagine, I was frustrated, but I wasn't ready to give up.

Then something unexpected happened when I was contracted to work for some larger general contractors on their jobs; when their employees and mine chatted at lunch time I found out how poorly treated, undervalued, and underpaid these big contractor's employees were.

So figured if I did the opposite of what those “big guys” did, their employees would come work for me, and surprise, they did.

At that point, everything changed!

I was finally able to:

• Get quality craftsman by treating them like you would treat your family.

• Realize my dream of full-scale remodels and architectural Landmarks preservation.

• Use the same values and desire for quality craftsmanship, that my dad instilled in me, only on a bigger scale.

• Start bidding on high-end renovation projects because I now had enough quality craftsman to do the work.

• Have a completely new business entirely based on referrals due to the quality of work we delivered to our clients, which they shared with their friends or family.

• Win projects that were only awarded by architects to contractors who could fulfill the standards of historical Landmark preservation work.

Now, fast forward to over 40+ years of serving luxury homes and Landmark restorations and I decided to leave it all behind and move west to be closer to, you guessed it, family.

Everything I learned, and everything I experienced has led to me realize that while all of it was great if I could do my favorite remodel over and over, what would it be?

Bathroom remodeling!
